Steven French's new book Hand Made in Tasmania
Steven French is a professional photographer and writer who lives on a small farm in the beautiful island of Tasmania.
For many years Steven operated the states largest wedding/portrait photographic studio (Reflections Photographic Studio) in the state with up to eight employees but chucked it all in to head off to university as a mature age student.
In recent years Steven has been the publisher/editor of the glossy Tasmanian Life Magazine and he now concentrates on fine art photography, top end commercial photography and writing.
He also creates portraits for those who are looking for something a little different than is normally produced by a photographic studio. He works on the philosophy that if you wouldn't hang it on the wall, even if you didn't know the person(s) in the photograph, it is not good enough. A portrait should firstly be a work of art.
Steven has recently written and photographed a book Hand Made in Tasmania. The book features interviews with 35 Tasmanian artisans who talk about their craft, why they work in Tasmanian, their inspirations and asperations. You can order Hand Made in Tasmania at the publishers website www.tasfish.com

Steven’s photographs have been published widely thought Australia and oversees. In 2008 and had two solo exhibitions in Tasmania and was part of three group exhibitions in Melbourne including one at the prestigious Menzies Art Centre. He was also a finalist in the 2008 Wrest Point Art Awards.
His photographs have featured in the Weekend Australian, Australasian Post, Tasmanian Life, Simply Living, Tasmanian's 40 Degrees South and glossy books such as Jack Thompson's Australian, Providor Island and Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises.
Steven is also a highly experienced commercial, industrial and food photographer.
Following the release of Hand Made in Tasmania Steven is now working on his next project, Dawdling Around Tasmania, which follows Steven's expedition to prove that Tasmanian is the best island in the world. It is a journey full of humour, great photographs and encounters with the artistic and eccentric (are they different?)
Steven’s stories and articles have appeared in many publications, particularly those with a rural flavour.
In 2008 his short story Arthur took out the People Choice Award at the Tasmanian Living Writers Week.
